Audi and Volkswagen concealed a turbocharger defect in some of their vehicles, according to a class action lawsuit filed June 21 in New Jersey federal court.

Plaintiff Julie Kimball says she leased a 2010 Audi A4 in 2009 and purchased the vehicle when the lease expired. In 2019, her Audi allegedly experienced the turbocharger defect. She says she paid about $3,000 to diagnose the issue and replace the turbocharger.

The Audi and VW class action lawsuit alleges the turbocharger defect affects the following Volkswagen and Audi 1.8L and 2.0L vehicles:

The engines in these vehicles reportedly have an exhaust gas turbocharger with a vacuum-operated internal wastegate that harnesses the exhaust gases to spin an axial turbine and compressor, supplying pre-compressed air to the engine cylinders for combustion when fuel is injected.

“When functioning properly, the class engine turbocharger increases torque and horsepower of class engines on demand,” the Audi class action lawsuit says.

However, the exhaust manifold and turbine side of the turbochargers allegedly create vibrations that can prematurely wear out the wastegate, causing it to become nonfunctional.

The VW turbocharger defect manifests shortly after the limited powertrain warranties expire, the Audi and VW class action lawsuit asserts.

Kimball says Audi and VW were aware of the turbocharger defect based on pre-production testing, design failure mode analysis, consumer complaints, warranty and replacement data from dealerships and other information available to the automakers. Despite this knowledge, they allegedly concealed the turbocharger defect from consumers.

In 2017, Volkswagen and Audi faced allegations that they concealed an engine defect that caused engine failure and required owners to pay hundreds of dollars to fix.

I had the turbo charger issue with my Audi A5 coupe Spent close to 10K to fix that issue and I had to get rid of the car 1.5 years later sold the car for 9k when I bought it for 17K

I have my 2012 Q5 in the garage as I type this comment. My wife, daughter, niece and sister in law was almost killed on Rte 80 in NJ when all of a sudden the car stopped accelerating. I was told by an Audi dealership I needed a gas tank cleaning. My q5 went from using a quart of oil every 3000 miles to now needing it every 500 miles. I finally had a capable mechanic diagnose the problem. The turbo is shot. Cost, if it’s only the turbo, is $3300.00. Still not sure if it’s only the turbo. Had same problem with my daughters A3, that fix was ONLy $1800.00. Needless to say I will never purchase an Audi again.

I have had this issue with my Audi A 3 for two years now. On top of the faulty air bags being recalled. I have also Been without a car for over a year now due to limited Audi technicians available within a 150 mile radius of me. And with no warranty in effect I am at a total loss of the cars value. I have been in a mess over it and have no one too ask about the car this whole time. Called the dealerships and get the run a round. And due to the confusion of the sub models of A 3. It Was very difficult to find the information needed. Even with the V.I.N #. Lone and behold this class action was filed on my birthday. Seem to to be a gift since I fully was blind sided with the faulty turbo charger causing a chain of problems for me to feel frustrated with;. Which with all of the research and hours I put into this car. I had come to figure out myself that it was in fact the cause and issue. And now I believe it has worn my engine very much. I had finally coasted it into my driveway a final time where it would not start back on jun of 2021. Please contact me. I am definitely the perfect candidate to be on board with you.

I have owned a 2012 VW Eos for 5 years now. This is the 2nd Eos i have owned and love the car! However, the service, multiple recalls and some not covered due to some minor loophole. i have had so many issues and not just that but with each issue I had to return my car multiple times to ever get the problem resolved. the customer service at the Volkswagen near me has got to be one of the worst I’ve ever experienced. each time I’ve had an issue with the car I have had to go up the ladder all the way up to the corporate office and get someone involved to intervene. and now they have stopped making the EOS so I am worried about parts for future repairs if I keep this car any longer

My A 3 was definitely like that for sure. Mine was also great. I loved it. Until one day. And then I had to go through similar events. I was consumed with stress from it for many months. And in fact I looked at it today. First time in a couple months. (Because I had felt defeated) without answers. I mean, I had paid for that car with almost every dollar that I had saved. Then to be with no car; it was terrible for me and my kids mental health. Still want it fixed. All the special tools ordered and research hours put into it. And parts interchangeable numbers were so confusing. With Volkswagen taking over Audi. And the different sub models . And the info dialect of the car was hard to understand due to translation. And Very limited American videos of do it yourself this past couple of years was very hard due to this.
