Auto recalls issued in July over part defects, fire risk - Top Class Actions

A number of major car manufacturers announced auto recalls in July over a variety of safety concerns, including fire risks, defective child seats, brakes, windshields and axle shafts.

The recalls affected drivers nationwide, and, as with any recall, could lead to future class action lawsuits.

Toyota announced it recalled more than 75,000 of its model year 2022-2023 Tacoma pickup trucks last month over concerns their upper child seat anchors could fail in the event of an accident.

Toyota warned that a failure of the upper child seat anchor, which the company says may not have been welded in properly, could endanger a child passenger.

The potentially improper welding of the upper child seat anchor can cause it to break free in the event of an accident, also possibly causing the child seat itself to loosen, according to the Toyota recall.

Toyota said it is still working out a remedy for the issue and, when one is ready, that it will notify drivers when they can take their vehicle to an authorized dealer to receive a repair at no cost.

Also last month, General Motors initiated a recall for more than 23,000 model year 2018-2020 Buick Regal vehicles after discovering that a defect in their braking systems could cause them to take longer to brake.

GM attributed the defect to a software error and warned that the issue could end up increasing the risk of an accident due to the potential delay in braking.

Specifically, the apparent software defect could lead to a loss of power in the Buick Regal vehicles’ vacuum-power brake assist, according to the Buick recall.

“If the vehicle’s vacuum-power brake assist partially or fully fails, braking events may require additional stopping distance, depending on the brake pedal force applied by the driver,” the Buick recall states.

GM says it was first alerted to the issue back on April 28 and began a formal investigation looking into the potential issue May 6.

Ford also announced a recall last month for more than 100,000 model year 2020-2022 Ford Maverick, Escape and Lincoln Corsair hybrid vehicles with 2.5-liter hybrid/plug-in hybrid engines over concerns an engine failure could lead to a fire risk.

The company says an excess of engine oil and fuel being released near ignition sources in the event of an engine failure could potentially lead to an under-hood fire.

Ford also expanded on a separate recall last month for model year 2021 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs recalled in May following a series of under-hood fires.

It added an additional 27,000 vehicles to the recall after consumers reported an additional five fires, bringing the total number of incidents to 21.

Also last month, Hyundai re-recalled more than 10,500 of its model year 2017-2018 Hyundai Ioniq HEV and PHV vehicles over safety concerns after discovering they may not have received the proper remedy components after an initial recall.

Hyundai originally recalled the Ioniq vehicles over concerns their rear seats could potentially overheat and catch fire, according to the auto recall.

Hyundai says the fire risk is caused by an issue with the vehicles’ power relay assemblies, specifically the fit condition of an electrical pin on its main relays.

“Increased electrical resistance between the main relay contacts can increase the risk of a thermal event, including the potential for a fire,” the Hyundai recall states.

Toyota issued another recall last month for more than 45,000 of its 2022 Tundra and Tundra hybrid vehicles over safety concerns after discovering they may contain defective axle shafts that can separate, causing a loss of stability and brake performance.

The defect is caused by an issue with the flange nuts on the sub-assemblies of the axle shaft becoming loose over time and causing the axle shaft to potentially separate from axle housing, according to the Toyota recall.

Ford, meanwhile, recalled more than 39,000 model year 2022 Bronco vehicles and more than 24,000 Ranger vehicles that were built from December 2021 to April 2022 over concerns they may contain defective windshields.

The apparent defect is caused by a faulty bonding in the vehicles’ windshields, which can cause them to detach in the event of an accident, according to the auto recall.

Ford says it became aware of the issue after receiving a complaint from a vehicle owner led to an investigation.

The EPAS Steering System on my Ford Explorer went out on me while I was driving across the Bonne Carre Spillway in New Orleans and I had to drive 45 minutes back home to Baton Rouge doing 50 mph. However, the recall that exists in 23 other states is not in effect “YET” for the state of Louisiana…go figure. :( Now my truck has been at the dealership for 3 weeks while we wait on the parts to be made and shipped. I am having to rent a vehicle and pay for the repairs, because Ford Investors refuse to take responsibility for this issue which is all across our USA. So not cool…
