Mazda's rugged new 2023 CX-50 aims to capture the attention of the outdoorsy, adventurous drivers typically targeted by the Subaru Outback.

Similar in size and price to the CX-5, Mazda's most popular model, the CX-50 looks and feels like a very different machine.

The all-new 2023 Mazda CX-50 is gearing up to hit dealerships this spring.

It's longer than the CX-5 -- both overall and wheelbase -- and wider with a lower roof. The proportions are more tall wagon than upright SUV.

The CX-50's proportions and its over 8 inches of ground clearance put it into competition with the likes of Subaru's Outback and the more expensive Audi A4 Allroad .

All-wheel drive is standard on the CX-50 and, in fact, all of Mazda's CX SUVs.

Underhood, you'll find either a naturally aspirated or turbocharged version of Mazda's 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G four-banger.

Naturally aspirated models make 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque.

Adding a twin-scroll turbocharger to the mix bumps output to 256 hp and 320 lb-ft when burning 93-octane premium fuel.

Mazda has outfitted the CX-50 with specialized Off-Road and Towing drive modes that aim to maintain the SUV's excellent driving dynamics in challenging conditions.
